Cornelius Acres Salon
I've been in the hairstyling game for more than 15 years now. Honestly, those early days were pretty tough, and I won't sugarcoat it. It's interesting how life can lead us back to our roots, back to the small town where we grew up, and that's exactly what happened to me. To be real, I wasn't a fan of cutting hair at first, and I definitely wasn't the best at it either. I could chat easily, but that was pretty much my only strength back then. Isn't it funny how things turn out?
I never imagined I’d be fortunate enough to run my own cozy little salon. It all came together through prayer and faith in God, aimed at building His kingdom. I once dreamed of being a missionary abroad, thinking I’d travel to places like Mexico or Africa to spread the word about Jesus. However, God had other ideas for me, choosing instead to make me a local missionary right here in my hometown.
My dad constructed this cozy little spot from scratch during a scorching Texas summer, where temperatures soared to 104 degrees and the heat index hit 117. Reflecting on it, I can see just how much he cares for me, especially since there was no shade to be found. I often joked that we were like the Israelites wandering in the wilderness, as every hiccup in the building process felt like a detour on our journey to the promised land. There were times when the gas company couldn't even locate the gas line they had just installed. It’s funny now, but back then, we were pretty discouraged.
When it was finally framed out, my Mom and I went in and wrote scriptures on the rafters. We dedicated it to the Lord and thanked him for this blessing and that is exactly what it has been. Never once have I complained about going to work in this place. I always call it my Peace and my Still Haven.
Psalm 46:10
Be still and know that I am God, I will be exalted in among the nations and, I will be exalted in all the Earth.
That Bible verse is definitely my favorite. It's amazing how God uses bumblebees as little reminders that I'm headed in the right direction, and the word itself brings me peace no matter what I'm facing. Throughout the journey of building this salon, I encountered countless bumblebee moments that I can't even begin to list. The most special one was the week I finally opened the salon, which happened to be a chilly day in November—specifically, November 30th. That date means so much to me because it’s my Mema's birthday. She was such a vital part of our family, and it felt like a true honor to launch my salon on that day.
In just over a year since its opening, this charming little spot has already witnessed countless wonderful moments. Inside, you can easily imagine the delightful little creatures that fill the space, and my clients frequently surprise me with bumblebee-themed gifts, which I absolutely adore. After all, who could ever have too many bumblebees?
